An April Fools “GOTCHA!”
Here’s an April Fools prank that I fell for many years ago. A friend and I were driving down Greenville Ave in Dallas on a rainy April first night. As we went by Nick’s Uptown - the famous blues club - the marquee read, “Tonight: ZZ Top”. So, “Wow!” we said, not realizing we were being punked, and in we went. The place was totally empty — and by that I mean we were literally the only customers. We sat down, a waitress came by and we ordered beers. We asked, “So what’s the deal? Is ZZ Top really playing here?” She snickered and said, “Wait and see.” We were bewildered. Finally, the stage lights go up and a band appears…..it was ….The Fabulous Thunderbirds!! The original line-up (this was 1984) with Kim Wilson, Jimmie Vaughan with his white Strat, etc. Wow! We had been tricked, but what a great trick! We got a private concert by the T-Birds! Hung out and met them after the show and everything. April Fools, indeed!
